Hats off!

hat fashionWinter’s well and truly here, and for many of us, this time of year is often a time when we’re more likely to hide our hair, either due to the summer heat and its ravages, or to protect it from the unpredictable and often frizz-inducing elements. We took to the catwalk to track down some of the most popular ways to play with and protect hair this season.

Floral Headpieces

The floral hair trend is usually a look that we find more often on the spring/summer catwalks, but, as with the braids trend, so many hair looks are becoming year-round favourites. Floral styles are especially suited to winter brides and their bridesmaids, adding a touch of fun and beauty, allowing a bride to experiment with an abundance of colour. Of course, the catwalk interpretation of the trend was all about excess, but this is still a look that can translate to the rest of us.

Mesh

As the warmer months are over, mesh has moved from our bodies to our heads and faces, with the trend being embraced by designer Antonio Marras. The models’ hair was whipped into structured, stiff updos while the makeup was all about a deep, dark lip. The addition of a piece of mesh or fishnet across the models’ faces and around the updos added a retro dose of glamour. Again, this is a look a less traditional winter bride might go for.

Headwraps and Scarves

Wraps and scarves have long been the reserve of African and Caribbean women all year round, but they also serve a great purpose when any of us are having a bad hair day. Of course, the models at Gucci weren’t exactly having a bad hair day! Turbans and scarves were used to add a glamorous touch to an otherwise quirky collection of curls, heavy fringes and oversized accessories.

Hats

Hats are another great way to hide a bad hair day, and in recent years, women in particular have loved playing with beanies in winter and fedoras in the summer. This winter, hats have become more formal; there are lots of classic bowlers as well as mini top hats, which could offer a sophisticated option for winter wedding guests.
