The new mousse

Long gone are the days of crispy curls that rustled when you walked; the modern mousse is a multi-tasking must-have, and is no longer the domain of curly girls only.

Modern mousse

Despite a somewhat negative reputation, mousse is the hair product that has endured throughout the Eighties, Nineties and early Noughties. In its heyday our curls were coiled up and tendrils were tousled, but while they looked on-trend, they often sounded like they’d just come out of a deep fat fryer. Thankfully, today’s mousse is a much more subtle affair, and we’re seeing it used on a myriad of red carpet styles, from soft waves to voluminous curls and ethereal blowouts. What’s more, the new mousse works its magic on almost every hair type, and even women with uber thick hair are seeing its styling benefits.

How it feels and looks

The latest mousse formulations offer solutions for many hair types. Some are more traditional, offering hold but also flexibility, while others still focus on highlighting curls and waves but also erase the dreaded halo of frizz, which is great news for those who don’t want to commit to a Keratin blowdry. For those with finer hair, there are plenty of volumising mousses to choose from. Thankfully, the application is still the same – it’s all about the scrunch, and then allowing the hair to air-dry.

Our faves

For serious curls, we love TIGI’s Bed Head Foxy Curls Extreme Curl Mousse - and not just for its fruity fragrance. When it comes to boosting body, Wella Professional's EIMI Extra Volume Mousse offers heat protection while pumping up the volume. Finally, for hair that needs a wee push-up and a touch of gloss, we love Schwarzkopf OSIS+ Glamination Plumping Shine Mousse - it provides a perfect amount of grip to withstand a night out too!
