Each year, products and techniques for achieving perfect blonde hair improve. This allows you to meet almost any client's request for blonde hair. However, there are still some essentials needed to ensure that you’re both happy with the results. Read on for our guide on what to consider when taking clients blonde.
The Consultation
The perfect blonde result starts with words, not tubes of colour! The consultation is your opportunity to find out more about your client’s colour goals. It’s an opportunity to ask them:
What kind of blonde are they going for?
Are they someone who wants a flawless all-over platinum finish?
Is their hair curly?
When was their last colour service?
Do they use box dyes?
Are they naturally dark?
How much time can they dedicate to at-home maintenance? The more questions you ask about your client’s expectations, the more you’ll be able to reach the perfect colour conclusion while also avoiding damage.
The consultation lets you check your client's hair and scalp condition, so take a close look at both during the appointment. This will give you clues as to whether they have any existing scalp sensitivity issues that might flare up with bleach usage, as well as allowing you to see the health of the hair.
Also, be sure to ask questions about your client’s lifestyle. All-over bleach might not be the right option for a busy working mum of three who’s likely going to need root maintenance every few weeks. If they’re someone who travels a lot, goes to the gym daily or simply doesn’t enjoy taking care of their hair, by asking the right questions you will be both happy with the final result.
Finally, the consultation is also a chance for you to be very open with your client about just how long this blonde transformation might take. If they’re looking for a complete transformation, be sure to let them know that they could be in your chair for three hours or more. By making them aware of timings they can come prepared on the day.
Current Condition
Speaking of damage, if your future blonde client is currently dealing with extreme damage, dry and split ends plus super dark roots, it’s vitally important that you are honest with them up front. If they need to focus on rebuilding and revitalising their hair before they can undergo a blonde transformation, you’re the expert that they trust, and hopefully they will listen to you!
The end goal of any colour process should be healthy hair that looks and feels great and your client needs to know that they can do their part too. By providing advice on the right colour care at home, your client’s money and your time and effort won’t go to waste.
Advise your clients on daily and weekly tips they can incorporate into their routine.
Daily:
Encourage your blonde clients to look into heatless styling methods rather than reaching for their straighteners every day. Blonde hair can become damaged more easily due to the process it goes through, and heat can be extremely damaging. Also, be sure to advise clients to use a heat protectant spray whenever they blow-dry or straighten their hair at home.

When needed:
Advise your clients to always ‘check-in’ with their hair – if their ends are feeling dry or brittle, they could consider a moisturising oil. Used sparingly on the ends it can protect and transform how the hair looks and feels.
Weekly:
Advise your clients on nourishing hair masks that cater specifically to their hair type. Whether their hair is fine or thick, going through the blonde process can leave the hair feeling weak so any time they spend on treating their hair at home will reap benefits and repair the hair from within.
Also, if your blonde client has gone for a super clean and bright finish, they’ll need to add toning shampoos and conditioners into their routine. Be sure to educate them on the value of taking care of their hair at home and they’ll be loving their blonde results for longer.
As hair professionals, we know that achieving the perfect colour in the chair is only half the story. Maintaining it is what keeps clients coming back. That’s where the power of blue and purple shampoos comes in.
