The hair colour industry is constantly evolving thanks to an ongoing love of its transformative powers. From Dua Lipa's red, to Zendaya and Rihanna going blonde to Kim Kardashian’s pink experiment; let’s rewind and take a look back at some memorable celeb hair inspo and how to advise your clients if they really want to go for a life-changing colour.
Trending Colours
There’s no denying that social media speeds up the trend cycles faster than ever before. Before the likes of Instagram and TikTok your clients would have been inspired by what they saw in monthly magazines; but now, with hundreds of thousands of trend videos being uploaded every single day, the temptation to play with colour is even more intense.
When singer Dua Lipa changed her hair colour, her fans instantly labelled it ‘Cherry Coke’. She said she just wanted a change; but little did she know her colour switch would inspire the world to play. What’s great about the Cherry Coke trend is that it can easily work for brunettes – but that doesn’t mean it’s an easy job. Lipa’s colour change took 10 hours, says colourist Ben Gregory!
He’d previously dyed Lipa’s hair raven black, which meant a lot of lifting had to take place, before adding the red tones and then glossing for a high-shine result.
Fake It ‘Til You Make It?
When it comes to Zendaya and Rihanna’s blondes they chose two very different options. While Zendaya’s gorgeous warm caramel tones are likely to be colour work, Rihanna has opted for a wig instead – which is a really great suggestion for clients who want to try something new without having to commit. Over the past few years wigs have become much more mainstream and mean zero damage to the hair.
It was a short, cropped wig that allowed Kim Kardashian to play with a pink crop. Her stylist Chris Appleton has really enabled the reality star and business owner to try any look, at any time through the use of wigs – in the space of just a few days she can be platinum blonde, baby pink or go back to her brunette roots. So, if you’re a stylist who’s comfortable with customising and fitting wigs, this could be a great additional service for you.
Keep It Real
If a client comes in with extreme damage, dry and split ends and super dark roots, are you going to promise them even, healthy-looking colour results? Hopefully not! It’s so important to not only provide results, but to keep your client informed on what they can do to ensure their colour lasts for as long as possible and looks vibrant. Number one is hair health, and that starts at home.
During the consultation have a thorough look at your client’s hair and scalp. This will give you immediate clues as to the health of the hair and if they have any existing scalp sensitivity issues.
Next, be sure to ask your client when their last colour service was and if they used box dye. Every piece of information they can give you might affect your final suggestions.
Also, always be sure to ask your client about their lifestyle. If they have a high-flying and demanding job, is it realistic for them to opt for an all-over bleach job that’s going to need maintenance every few weeks? Probably not. By finding out if your client is an avid gym-goer, someone who travels a lot, or barely has time for herself after taking care of her young children, you will be able to make the right decision for them that suits their lifestyle.
Keeping things upfront and honest with your client also means letting them know there’s a possibility that the appointment might take longer than expected. If they’re looking for a complete transformation, they could be in your chair for three hours or more. By letting them know beforehand you’re ruling out any unwelcome issues on the day – plus they can plan ahead and bring snacks and reading materials!
