Welcome to Week in My Shoes, where we step into the lives of inspiring professionals and get a behind-the-scenes look at what makes their worlds tick. This week, we’re catching up with Metta Francis an award-winning mobile nail technician and the powerhouse behind Nails by Mets.
Since launching her London-based business in 2010, Metta has cultivated a loyal client base and become the go-to for influencer and corporate events alike. On top of that? She’s a devoted mum, a savvy team leader, and a seasoned entrepreneur who knows how to balance creativity with business acumen.
Words of Wisdom from Metta
“It’s easy to be distracted by social media and what’s hot/trending at the moment but this is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on your own business and development. Learn about your ideal client base and identify what they need and want from you. Invest time and money into your education, skills, and top-tier products and services so you can be the best!”
My Mondays usually start off slow (if I’m lucky). After a cooked breakfast, I dive into admin mode replying to emails, checking Trello, sending quotes, scheduling appointments, and prepping for upcoming events. With major brand collaborations and corporate bookings on the horizon, there’s always plenty to coordinate from health & safety docs to logistics and product orders.
Later, it’s mum duty. We visit the library, then I head out for an evening client appointment a luxury manicure and pedicure. I finally roll into bed around 1am, exhausted but fulfilled.
Tuesday: On-Site at Skin Rocks HQ
Tuesdays are usually my calisthenics day, but not this week! I’m working at Skin Rocks HQ alongside three other talented nail techs, including my good friend Tinu Bello of Manicured London. We’re back-to-back with removals and fresh sets. It’s always a joy to connect with others in the industry, but after a long day and a forgotten dust extractor (oops!), my body is definitely feeling it.
Wednesday: Nail Art & Creative Prep
Wednesdays are sacred no client appointments, just creativity. I use this time to develop nail art menus for upcoming pop-ups. Today, I’m designing for two events: one for Anthropologie, the other for the Hunger Games book launch. The designs need to reflect specific moods and aesthetics, so I start with sketches, test colours, and paint samples. Anthropologie signs off on the look by the evening - win!
Thursday: Press, Pole & Precision
Today I complete the Hunger Games design and send it off the publishers love it! I also respond to a journalist request for a feature on nail trends (I love contributing to industry pieces and have been featured in Vogue, Marie Claire, Refinery29, and more).
After school pick-up, I head to my weekly pole class at The Warehouse Studios. It’s one of the few non-negotiables in my week movement is my reset. I pack my kit when I get home because tomorrow’s a shoot day.
Friday: On Set for Olivia Von Halle
It’s an early start 8am call time in East London. I dodge unreliable Ubers and take public transport instead. On set for Olivia Von Halle’s latest campaign, I give the model a simple nude almond manicure and tidy toes. It’s a quick job, and I’m done by 10am, heading home for some well-earned downtime.
Saturday: Family First
Weekends are for family. After swimming lessons, it’s a chilled day movies, games, and good food. A welcome break from the hustle.
Sunday: Reconnecting with Friends
I finally catch up with friends I haven’t seen in years - life just got in the way! We meet in Soho for bottomless dim sum at Yauatcha and spend hours reminiscing. Before heading home, I stop by an Asian supermarket in Chinatown to stock up on pantry essentials ready to take on another busy week.
