Looking ahead – 2022 trends you’ll love!
It’s time to look to the future and it’s looking bright. Check out the must-have trends from some of the best in the business. Compiled by hair and beauty journalist Charisse Kenion.
Statement hair is back
And we’re not just talking size; statement hair for 2022 is all about more, more and more! Hair accessories are set to be huge for the new year; the catwalks were rife with stunningly beautiful pins, barrettes and head bands; think pearls, oversized velvet bows and chunky gold accents. It’s time to have fun again!
For Barry Maddocks, Creative Director of Haringtons, hair accessories are definitely the main event. He says, “think big statement hair clips: accessories that can really add an extra big dose of fabulosity to any style! Hair accessories are also great for adding personality to your client’s look and help them to make a statement about who they are.”
Another must-have style for 2022? Barry says keep it slick.
“It’s time for that all-important straightener to come out! I'm seeing a lot more clients opting for super straight and super shiny hair and I am loving it, especially when it’s teamed with a middle parting.”
Let’s cut it off!
For November Collective co-founder Christopher Laird, 2022 is all about the excitement of coming in for a haircut.
“I believe that 2022 will see clients returning to the salon for a good old ‘haircut’, after becoming bored of the grown-out length they embraced during lockdown. They will be wanting a big chop and opting for classic cuts, such as the bob, a timeless, versatile style that works for everyone – no matter the hair type, colour or texture,” says Edinburgh-based Christopher.
A key trend for hair and beauty over the last few months has been the influence of the ’90s, and it’s not going anywhere. From chunky, Spice Girls-inspired money pieces to thinner eyebrows making an appearance, everyone is longing for those glamorous ‘90s looks.
Christopher agrees:
“When it comes to styling, we’re definitely going to see the resurgence of ‘90s and early noughties trends, such as girl-band inspired, quirky up do’s with ultra-straight tendrils left loose at the front, or the Clueless -inspired blowdry. But I think, for really fashion-forward clients, the slick-backed wet gel ‘just stepped out of the shower’ look is back. It’s a really versatile style that works for all hair lengths, from short to long, and is really easy for clients to achieve at home.”
Fresh start
It’s official; everybody is over 2021! For beauty expert Katie Godfrey, it’s time for a fresh start when it comes to skin, nails, and most importantly: lashes.
“Earlier this year lots of people were opting for a lash lift; it’s a lower maintenance treatment that means clients don’t need to come into the salon so often. Lash lifts have now become a firm favourite, and while that’s definitely set to continue throughout 2022, many of us want our lash extensions back!” says Katie.
She says your clients will be lining up for dramatic lashes: “they will be are fuller and thicker than ever before for clients who want that super dark lash line.”
When it comes to nails, salon-owner Katie says length will be the trend of 2022. And it makes a lot of sense as many of your clients will have embraced their natural nails and will have experienced some serious growth.
Katie says: “With so many nail strengtheners out there to help with growth, this is a great time to grow your clients’ natural nails.”
And for those who haven’t seen any growth, there will be a renewed love affair with nail extensions. For many of your clients, long nails mean the ultimate in glamour, and after spending so much time indoors, they are ready to play with some luxurious length.
When it comes to skin trends for 2022, Katie says it’s all about Dermaplaning, a professional procedure that’s become invaluable to many as it delivers super smooth skin that glows. While a scalpel is used to exfoliate the skin it also removes ‘peach fuzz’ which can often add texture, especially underneath makeup. The reason it’s set to become even bigger in 2022 is because trends for #glassskin and #glowingskin have grown even more since we’ve been on lockdown. As we’ve been indoors for a while it’s meant we’ve spent more time – and money – on skincare. Now that we’re back outside again, it’s no wonder we want to show off our skin, ideally with minimal makeup.
“Clients are loving the smooth, makeup-ready skin that dermaplaning delivers and it’s a great combo to have with a full facial,” says Katie.

Chantelle: Capital & Me, my self-employed journey & the importance of networking
Introducing Chantelle, a talented beautician, hair extension specialist and proud owner of ‘Chantelle’s Beautique’. We sit down with Chantelle as she tells us how she started out in the industry, her top tips for becoming self-employed, struggles she faced and overcame along the way and her favourite products that she can’t live without!
My treatment room is based in my garden at home and I offer a full range of Hair and Beauty treatments specialising in skin care, brows & hair extensions. My clients love my set up and really appreciate the little touches like being able to park with ease and having more of a cosy experience away from the hustle and bustle of a busy salon. As well as running my own business at home, I also enjoy teaching others on their journey starting out in the trade with my own accredited courses at home as another branch of my business called ‘The Hair and Beauty Training Beautique’. You may also see me in your local Capital Hair & Beauty as I also tutor for one of their training providers ‘Face Forward’ offering brow lamination and lash lift and tint courses.
Meet Sophie, owner of ‘Sophie’s Lashes & Beauty’ which she has been running now for over 7 years!
Sophie gained a wealth of experience working in the industry from her background working in prestigious 5 hotel & spa and salon settings which lead her up to starting a business of her own. We talk about all things beauty and the curved tweezers that she can’t live without!
Hi Sophie, tell us a little bit about your journey and how you go into the industry and what lead up to starting out on your own?
I gained a lot of knowledge from working in different settings from working with a big teams in a 5 star hotels and spas to smaller beauty salon environments. I gained so much knowledge from working in both settings and although it was hard work and long hours.
I started out by working in a few different 5 star hotels with spas and a salons where I gained all my knowledges and experiences from each one to put together for my own business! It was hard work and long hours all the practice paid off. It was actually one of my clients I saw regularly in the salon I worked at that said I should set up on my own and gave me the confidence to go self-employed and I’ve not looked back since!
Something Old - Something New
Does the bob ever go out of style? Short answer: No. The reason for the evergreen appeal of the bob is because, depending on the length, it’s a look that can suit any face shape or hair texture. Right now, it can be anything from a short and swingy French girl bob, a luxurious long bob, or a razor-cut curly bob. For Tori Kiff, it’s about keeping things fresh with the addition of a fringe.
“I love updating a classic curly bob with a fringe, especially as so many of my curly clients seem to think it’s a style they shouldn’t have. I’ve managed to show so many clients that it’s all down to fear and that actually, a curly bob is so flattering and easy to style; I advise them to use their fingers to curl their fringes or to use a brush when styling,” shares Tori.
Of course, the most modern way to wear a bob is the Bixie, a hybrid of the bob and pixie; think classic bob updated with a fringe or micro bangs, or you could play with the Butterfly Bob. RUSH Creative Director Andy Heasman’s a fan.
