Colour's Heating Up

Autumn’s here and it’s time to turn heads with beautiful, wearable hair. Think colour that enhances and just glows with health. Check out the predictions of some of the best in the business.

The personal approach

For Bad Apple’s Rita Benedetto, Autumn will see clients taking things all the way back when it comes to hair colour.

“I feel that this Autumn we will see a big shift towards warm, coppery tones as clients return to a more natural look. Hair colour is more personalised and easier to wear than ever, and I think it’s all about colour that is very low maintenance.

“Strawberry blonde is also a massive new trend. Rosy hues are extremely flattering and easy to maintain with Schwarzkopf Gold Shampoo. As our clients aren’t at the office as much, they’re able to play with lots of tonal colour options, and pink hair has been one of the most Googled looks over lockdown. I think people are realising that playing with colour can be low commitment when it’s done right.” Follow Rita @riibendz @badapplehair

OSMO Ambassador, Becky Sutherland agrees when it comes to the pink trend. “Over the past few months metallic hair has been popular, particularly pink metallic through the springtime, as a result we’re seeing a rise in clients who are shifting from auburn hair to a metallic copper. I think these copper hues are going to be a very popular trend in the Winter too, as they add warmth and are a really wearable option for anyone who prefers a more natural look, but can also be amped up to a brighter orange copper for those who are feeling a little more expressive!” @beckypinklemonhair

Seeing red
Dylan Brittain, of Rainbow Room International and Schwarzkopf UK Ambassador says there’s a red shade for every skin tone and that Autumn is the perfect time to make the switch.

“Reds and coppers are beautiful for adding a warmth and glow to a client’s complexion. Ruby reds and fiery coppers will be particularly on-trend this season and with these hues it’s really important to recommend high quality, professional shampoos, conditioners, hair masks and treatments for clients to use at home.

For brunettes, I think a subtle tone of red looks gorgeous and will add a beautiful sheen to the hair,” continues Dylan, before breaking down his blonde forecast.

“It’s not just about golden or honey blondes; instead we’re loving apricot blondes. They have a slight tinge of red and look truly beautiful against all skin tones. Softer in appearance than a copper but richer than your usual golden blonde, apricot blonde is perfect for blondes who want to experiment with their hair colour for the new season without trying something too drastic. Plus, this will blend back to a golden blonde beautifully.” @dylanbrittainhair

“Throughout AW21 I think we will see lots of darker tones mixed in with lighter pieces to create that custom blend,” says Jay Birmingham.  “I like to call it the ‘halo effect’: golden browns and brunette tones are paired with honey and caramel shades of blonde around the outer layers of the hair to add a light effect and add some depth. This colour is a great way to play around with blonde and little upkeep is required as the light tones grow out beautifully.” @jaybirminghamhair

Joico’s David Murray says it’s less about being subtle and that clients are going to want some seriously bold options. “Clients want to take advantage of their newfound freedom so I think they will be looking for flashes of colour, inspired by the ‘90s. Think bright and bold fuschia pink, ruby red and ocean blue!”

Rich, deep tones are calling for Dan Spiller, JOICO Color Ambassador for the UK, Europe and Ireland.

“As we move into autumn our attention turns to new, rich colours and first up is ruby red. It’s all about creating a beautiful, ruby red, and embracing the richness of red hues and partnering them with a vibrant shade. A really invigorating colour, this will be hugely popular for those looking for something a bit bolder.

“For those looking for something more subtle, the Californian blonde is back, with a twist. Created with a darkened root, this beautiful colour works in with the clients’ natural root, while adding a new dimension to the hair. Using a mixture of low lights to break up the blonde, this will be a very popular look for Autumn.” @danspiller2010
