The Colour Technique You Need To Try In 2026 And How It Can Increase Your Salon Revenue
In a world where clients are asking for colour that looks expensive, natural and totally personalised, salons need services that deliver beautiful results while also supporting business growth.
One technique gaining attention in the industry is the Polychrome Colour Service from Schwarzkopf Professional - a modern approach to colour that focuses on multi-tonal dimension, customised placement and premium-looking results.
But beyond the artistry of Polychrome, the service also presents a real opportunity for salons to increase service value and grow revenue.
So, what is the Polychrome Colour Service?
The Polychrome Colour Service is a celebration of premium colour craftsmanship in hairdressing, where every blend, contrast and shimmer works together to create a multidimensional finish for the client.
Using two to four carefully selected shades, stylists build soft contrast and depth through strategic placement. The result is colour that catches the light beautifully and feels completely tailored to the client.
But what makes Polychrome particularly exciting for salons is that it can be used to enhance any tone, from natural-looking blondes and brunettes to bold fashion shades, and across all hair textures. Even better, the techniques are designed to be efficient and adaptable, meaning stylists can deliver a high-end result without overcomplicating the service.
A Smart Way to Elevate Your Colour Menu
For salons looking to increase their average bill, Polychrome can be positioned as a premium upgrade within the colour menu. By introducing a service that focuses on bespoke shade selection and multi-tonal placement, stylists can create a clear distinction between standard colour services and more tailored, high-end results.
This can help salons:
Increase average service spend per client
Attract clients looking for more luxurious colour results
Encourage upgrades from existing clients
Showcase technical expertise of your colourists
When clients understand the craftsmanship behind the service, they are often more than happy to invest in it.
A Real Example: Finding £30K in Untapped Revenue by Elevating Services
To explore how small changes to services and pricing can have a big financial impact, we spoke to salon owner and colour specialist Tim Scott-Wright, who recently shared how a simple shift in approach helped transform revenue in his salon.
After reviewing the salon’s finances with his accountant, Tim realised there was an opportunity hiding in plain sight … and this was in the form toners.
Like many salons, toner services had gradually become included within blonding appointments. But when the team looked at the numbers, they realised that 46% of their business came from blonding, meaning a huge amount of product, time and expertise was effectively being given away.
Once the cost of toners was properly incorporated into the client’s bill, within a year, the change had generated an additional £30,000 in revenue for the salon.
This same mindset is now being applied to the way Tim approaches colour services. By introducing premium, bespoke offerings such as the Polychrome Colour Service, Tim and colourists like him have an opportunity to elevate their colour menu and create clear value around advanced colour craftsmanship.
As Tim’s experience shows, sometimes the biggest opportunities for business growth aren’t about working harder - but about recognising the true value of the services you already deliver and positioning them accordingly.
Tim Talks Polychrome:
Why do you think services like Polychrome are so relevant right now?
Clients often want colour that feels personalised to them and luxurious. Polychrome allows stylists to create something that’s tailored to the client which naturally feels more premium. In salon we’ve found this has really elevated our appointments and adds a further talking point between hairdresser and client.
What advice would you give salons introducing premium colour services?
Don’t be afraid to position your work properly! If you’re creating bespoke colour, that’s a skilled service and you should be charging for it. When clients understand the detail (and multiple products!) behind the work you are doing, they see the value – and their hair will appreciate it too.
What was the biggest lesson from your £30K discovery?
The biggest lesson for us was ensuing we value every part of the service. We weren’t charging properly for toners because we thought it was the right thing to do for our clients, but actually we were undervaluing our expertise and taking a hit cost wise. Once we changed that mindset, it made a huge difference for our salon financially.
For clients, Polychrome delivers a beautiful, bespoke result. For salons, it offers a way to elevate services, increase ticket value and celebrate true colour craftsmanship. As Tim’s story shows, sometimes the biggest opportunities for growth come from simply valuing the expertise you already deliver every day.
