Spooky season is upon us and while festive trends come and go, when it comes to Halloween inspiration Lady Gaga is the one who constantly serves up spine-tingling looks. Read on to find out why Gaga is the ultimate Halloween icon!
She’s unafraid
First of all, the reason Gaga’s looks work so well for Halloween is because she’s unafraid and is willing to commit to a look, from the makeup to the hair to the clothes. Since she first emerged on the music scene in 2008 with Just Dance, Lady Gaga has constantly pushed boundaries when it comes to her looks, no matter what her audience thinks. In 2009 she used every public appearance to make a statement, including wearing fake blood and sequins to perform fan favourite Paparazzi at the VMAs and in 2010 she caused a storm worldwide by wearing the now infamous meat dress to that year’s VMAs!
How you can channel this Gaga trait:
This is one of the easiest traits to follow, because what better time of the year to go all out for shock value than at Halloween! Obviously it’s important to consider your audience; we don’t recommend you wear your take on the meat dress if the Halloween party invites include little kids…
She loves to transform
All the great popstars have one thing in common; they routinely change up their look. Just like Gaga’s predecessor Madonna, every year or so she will bring something new to her look, but her core values of shock and gothic glamour always stay intact. This gives her the ability to appeal to every audience while also seeming fresh and current. On her recent Mayhem tour we were treated to a slew of stunning glamorous looks, which included some of the most impressive wigs ever, because how on earth did they stay on her head through all that rigorous dancing?
What was even more refreshing was that for the final song of the evening, she happily removed all her makeup and took her bows with her incredible team of dancers. We don’t know how many celebrities would willingly let their audience see them makeup-free and for that, we salute her!
How you can channel this Gaga trait:
Just relax and enjoy. By transforming your look you might learn something new about yourself, or you might discover a newfound confidence. Halloween is the perfect time to play with wigs and makeup for a haunting or daring look because, at the end of the day, if you don’t like it, you can remove the wig and take off the makeup, and go right back to who you were before.
She loves to have fun
In her most recent music video for Dead Dance, Lady Gaga gives us creepy vibes from the very first second, which is no surprise as the video was directed by the king of goth cinema Tim Burton, known for Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride.
The video features a spooky selection of dancing dolls but the creepy vibes also come through in Gaga’s hair and makeup. Gaga’s longterm makeup artist is Sarah Tanno, and over the years these two have created so many striking looks – remember when Gaga channeled a Robert Palmer girl from that iconic 1980s video Addicted to Love for the 2023 Oscars?
That was Tanno’s work and proves that this duo can do high fashion glam one day and goth the next. For the Dead Dance video Tanno gave Gaga chalky skin etched with tiny cracks, as if she was a broken porcelain doll who’d been glued back together again. The finishing touch was Gaga’s slightly dirty little Bo Peep outfit teamed with a spiral curled wig created by Gaga’s regular go-to hairstylist Frederic Aspiras.
How you can channel this Gaga trait:
If you feel like you want to experiment this Halloween but feel nervous about stepping out in a new look, team up with a bunch of your hair and beauty pro friends and dress each other up! You’ll have so much fun prepping and getting ready, by the time you leave the house, you won’t care who’s watching. Or you might just decide to celebrate at home in your Gaga glam – we’re sure she’d approve.
