Every first Monday in May, the fashion world turns its attention to the Met Gala, the high-profile fundraising event benefiting the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. More than just a glamorous red (or this year, blue) carpet, the Gala also celebrates the opening of the Institute’s annual fashion exhibit.
In 2025, that exhibit is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, a tribute to the impact of Black culture on global fashion history. It has already become the Institute’s most successful fundraiser in over 70 years, and the Gala itself reflected that same power and presence.
Teyana Taylor’s Harlem-Inspired Zoot Suit
One of the night’s most talked-about looks came from Teyana Taylor, who teamed up with Ruth E. Carter, the legendary costume designer behind Black Panther and Sinners. Together, they crafted a modern take on the zoot suit, a 1930s–40s style known for exaggerated shoulders and flowing trousers.
Teyana’s version, in a rich crimson red, featured dramatic structure and a pleated train dotted with delicate rosebuds. Her durag-covered hair, styled by Edith Donaldson-Wheeler, paid tribute to Black hair culture, while makeup artist Yeika Glow gave her a toffee-toned glossy lip and emphasized her cheekbones with expert contouring.
Betty Boop’s Influence on Met Gala Hairstyles
The surprise hair icon of the evening? Betty Boop. The cartoon character’s signature kiss curls made a comeback, framing the faces of several stars.
Dua Lipa wore hers with long, glossy waves pulled into a bun by stylist Peter Lux, while her luminous pink-toned makeup was created by Katie Jane Hughes.
Others sporting the look included Taraji P. Henson, Angel Reese, Sydney Sweeney, and Ayo Edebiri.
The combination of vintage charm and modern styling made this one of the night's most enchanting beauty trends.
Nails That Told a Story
Nail art was elevated to high fashion on the blue carpet. Some celebs went for subtle elegance, but others turned their manicures into mini-masterpieces.
Sha’Carri Richardson’s elaborate set by Angie Aguirre, using OPI polish, featured soft peaches, lilacs, and oranges — each nail with its own unique baroque-inspired design, complete with 3D floral sculptures.

First-time Met Gala guest Doechii made a bold entrance in a Louis Vuitton shorts suit, but it was her 3D face art that sparked the most conversation. Created by prosthetics expert Malina Stearns, the raised design featured the Louis Vuitton logo embossed on her skin.
Makeup by Chelsea complemented the look with a glossy black-lined lip and a flush of rich berry blush. The face tattoo was edgy, elegant, and likely to inspire future beauty trends.
White Suit Revolution on the Blue Carpet
Several stars embraced white tailoring, transforming the classic suit into a canvas for gender-fluid style.
Madonna took cues from Marlene Dietrich, wearing Tom Ford’s Haider Ackermann, adding a soft floral accent and a slick center part.
Zendaya, styled by Law Roach, stunned in a crisp, custom Louis Vuitton three-piece suit, complete with a wide-brimmed hat. Her glowing highlighter, by Ernesto Casillas, ensured her face shone even beneath the brim. Hair was twisted into a low knot by Ursula Stephen.
Anna Sawai wore a similarly chic white suit styled by Karla Welch, though hers was more relaxed. Hair was worn loose by Anh Co Tran, and her dewy makeup was the work of Yukari Obayashi Bush.
Though nearly identical, Zendaya and Anna’s looks showed two sides of the same trend: structured power versus effortless ease.
